Jessica Jackson Hutchins works in multiple mediums, most recently in clay and paper. Her sculptures have a primitive feel, but on closer look, reveal a controlled restraint that plays with notions of raw and cool, representation and abstraction. In the past, Hutchins has addressed themes such as personal identity, public/private space, and domesticity. Her ceramic objects are foregrounded instead in their materiality. Precious work removed from precious presentation is appropriate for these pieces; their context can be as malleable and mysterious as their intent.
